Whats the line between cracking and hacking encryption?

To put in simple words the meaning of hacking and cracking are as follows:

Hacking: Hacking means illegally accessing other people’s computer systems (mainly for destroying, disrupting or carrying out illegal activities on the network or computer systems).

Cracking: To copy commercial software illegally by breaking (cracking) the various copy-protection and registration techniques being used.

Crackers are looked down upon by real hackers and they are the ones seen on the news for causing billions of dollars in damages.

The HD-DVD key was generated in an act of cracking that allowed users to copy HD-DVDs and view them without having to buy original HD-DVDs whose profits would have gone to the company producing those HD-DVDs.

Typically, a proprietary software is protected by unique decryption keys to unlock it for use. In the case of HD-DVDs, such a key allows to unlock the content of the HD-DVD to be accessed. Crackers were able to generate a generic key here that allowed all HD-DVDs (that presumably hit the shelves before 23rd April) to be opened.

Well, let us not forget Ankit Fadia, who was a hacker n not a CRAKER. That is the reason perhaps why the Chandra Babu Naidu government had granted him land to build the first ever hacking institute in India. At the end of the day it is simply how u use the KNIFE. To kill someone or to chop the vegge !!
