India :
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said today that it had sharply cut the fee paid by all telecoms users to fund loss-making rural expansion by state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) that is known as Access Deficit Charge.
In a statement it said;
The main thrust of this regulation is to give further relief to domestic consumers. The access deficit charge on outgoing international calls has been reduced by more than 65 percent to 0.80 rupees per minute.
India already has some of the cheapest call rates in the world. However, charges for international and domestic long-distance calls are higher as they are used to subsidise BSNL’s expedition into loss-making rural areas.
