MF Husain’s unending fetish to flirt with controversies went a step further with his latest work. After portraying Hindu deities in nude before, his latest work shows a naked woman in front of a wheel resembling the one used in India’s national flag - the ‘Chakra. The painting is a part of a series to be auctioned in aid of Indian victims of last year’s Tsunami.
Now the police are investigating a complaint against him. Ramesh Shinde, a spokesman for the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti that lodged the police complaint said;
Husain’s latest painting offends not only Hindus but Indians at large. He cannot be allowed to insult Indians and Hindus in the name of artistic license. He must be arrested immediately.
When contacted, the police merely said, they were probing the complaint.
Husain, 90 years old now has irked the religious sentiments of people before with his controversial works. However, he escaped prosecution so far.
Husain has apologized for his depiction of Mother India as naked now. However, Vishwa Hindu Parishad national coordinator Venkytesh Abdev said,
Mr. Husain has been doing this for the last so many years and every time he apologises and goes scot-free.
Now the question is, should artistic liberty be protected and let things run as they had been or should there be a guideline at least demarking the lines that one shouldn’t cross. We have seen what happened following the controversial Muhammed toons that appeared in a Danish publication.
