India yesterday announced a range of relaxations in its telecom rules that only allows more local and foreign players to enter the country’s burgeoning telecom sector as well as allowing existing and newer players more flexibility, slashes call rates even further and makes internet telephony legal in the country.



The most sweeping of all announcements India`s Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran made yesterday is the reduction of the entry fee and the license fee for telecom service providers. The annual license fee payable by operators for providing international long-distance call service and national long-distance call service has been slashed from 15 percent to 6 percent of gross revenues. The cut, to be effective from Jan. 1 next year will apply to both the existing players and new entrants.



The plan to lower national and international long-distance call rates will be a reality by the end of the month when the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) implements the carrier access code (CAC). The code will allow individual users to decide which company will carry their long-distance traffic.



So, Bharti mobile phone users can indicate whether calls they wish to make from Delhi to Mumbai are to be carried on a Reliance Infocomm or a VSNL long-distance network as these companies’ rates are more attractive than Bharti’s, for instance.



At last the monopoly on telephone serice providers on their users is going to end. That’s a real good news indeed!
