Kanishka ghost invoked is invoked again by Paul Martins Liberal government in Canada with the hope that it would stay in power in the wake of the no-confidence motion being pushed by Canada’s three main opposition parties. The motion is certain to pass today which will take down a minority government on a pure no-confidence motion for the first time in over a century.

The Liberals have started campaigning already with promises of all sorts being made that includes the initiation of an enquiry on the Kanishka bombing 20 years back. The government had so far avoided addressing the demand for a public enquiry after the chief terror masterminds behind the massacre that killed 329 people on June 23, 1985 over the Atlantic were acquitted of all the charges.

Some of the families listened as the witnesses described detailed confessions by both of the accused. One accused was Ripudaman Singh Malik, a wealthy businessman who bankrolled Sikh terrorists. The other was Ajaib Singh Bagri, a preacher who called for a massacre of Hindus. (Read more about it here)

Whatever the Canadian government does now, including declaring an enquiry into the barbaric massacre of innocent passengers 20 years back by Canada-based terrorists, it can’t escape the guillotine it faces today. The very act is an insult to the memory of the Kanishka victims. Besides, it looks like attempting to lock the stable after the horse has bolted.
